RAT Cutlery re Model 1 Folders
More Information on the problems between RAT Cutlery and
Ontario. Jeff Randell Posted the following:
“It has come to our attention that Ontario has ordered more
Model 1 folders from overseas. This is after Ontario and RAT agreed to stop
producing this due to it being manufactured overseas. We have also heard
that there has been a huge price reduction on the folder. We have formally
requested that Ontario not use the RAT name or logo on these new folders
since we do not endorse this product. The main reason we pulled our
association with this knife is due to the overseas production and the
quality going down hill after the initial production run. Mike and I
decided that since we could not control the quality coming out of Asia that
we would cease the manufacture of this folder. Also, after numerous
attempts to buy spare parts from manufacturer Paul Lin for the folder (so
we could give them to customers who had a problem), we finally gave up. Any
and all warranty repairs became a matter of Mike and I buying new folders
from Ontario and stripping parts off of them to send to our customers. We
apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, but if we knew then
what we know now about dealing with overseas manufacturers, then we would
have never allowed this folder to be built off-shore in the first place.
As for the USA made product built by Ontario, Mike and I plan to continue
to endorse that as long as the quality stays to spec.”

More RAT News
This is the latest from RAT Cutlery:
Knife designs owned by Jeff Randall and Mike
Perrin include: the RAT skinner, Laser Strike, RTAK, RTAK II, TAK, RAT-7, RAT-5,
RAT-3, Model 1 (Folder), RC-3, RC-4, RC-6, and the sheath systems for the
RC-3, RC-4 and RC-6. The RAT skinner and Laser Strike models are not
currently produced but will be re-introduced at a later date. Jeff Randall
and Mike Perrin do not endorse or approve of the RTAK, RTAK II, TAK, RAT-5
and RAT-7 knives that are currently being produced by Ontario Knife
Company. RAT Cutlery plans to begin production of these models soon under
the original name and specs owned and developed by Randall's Adventure and
Training (RAT).
And Jeff says We will probably start with the RAT-5 or
TAK.
It will be interesting to see if any changes are
made to the current designs.

RAT Cutlery Co
Here is a post by Jeff Randall, part owner of the RAT
Cutlery Co, on Bladeforums:
“I'm sort of
reluctant to add this thread but I've received several phone calls from
customers and also one from someone in NY saying the rumor is Ontario Knife
Co. is planning on suing RAT Cutlery. The bottom line to all of this is we
like Ontario. They're a good company. They have done well with the Ontario
RAT line and we wish them continued success in what they do. Our contract
with Ontario was over a long time ago. We are no under any contract with
Ontario in any fashion. I do know that they filed paperwork with the Patent
and Trademark Office on February 28, 2008 claiming ownership of the name
"TAK 1" and "RTAK" As you all know the name RTAK goes
back to the Newt Livesay Wicked Knife Co. days...long before Ontario. But
that's really not an issue to us even though it is our intellectual
property - in the same way we retained ownership of all our designs.
Mike and I both have tried to call Ontario and email them asking them
what's going on and what's up with the rumor but no one will speak to us or
email us. With that said, we haven't been served any papers either so I'm
thinking that this whole business of getting sued is simply rumor since I'm
not sure what they could even sue us for. Anyway, just know that RAT
Cutlery is forging ahead and plan to be in this game for a long time to
come. I know one of the dealers who emailed me was sort of worried since he
planned on doing some advertising on RAT Cutlery. We have too much invested
to quit now
One last thing, since Ontario refuses to communicate with us in any
fashion, any Ontario RAT warranty work will have to go directly to them and
not through us until things change and everyone gets happy again.”

We at Rustic Forge Knives
fully support the RAT Cutlery Co., in their endeavours. Both Jeff and Mike
were very helpful when we approached them about selling their products and
awarded us Dealership and Distributorship rights for Australia.
Having felt the “big stick”
from the “Big Boys” in the Knife Industry incl., those in Australia in the
Distributorship ranks we can feel for the RAT Cutlery Co.
We have always supported
small Knifemakers such as Bark River Knife and Tool and Ranger Knives not
only because of the quality Knives they produce but the quality of service
they provide which is not available through the established large
Knifemakers.
We will continue to support
the RAT Cutlery Co., and ask our customers to do the same but we also
support Jeff’s request not to boycott Ontario products and again ask our
customers to follow suit.
Let’s hope that this matter
is resolved quickly.

Knives Australia Magazine to Close
We picked the following up from the Laventrix Forum:
“I have just spoken to Keith. The Knives Australia
Magazine is no longer.
Keith and Joan have made the decision the
Knife industry will be better served with changes they are making.
The magazine concept will re-appear in the form of the AKC newsletter.
So instead of buying the mag at the local newsagent join the club, reap the
other benefits and get the new news letter delivered.”
