Marble's signature Woodcraft Hunting knife dates back nearly a century. The
dramatic sweep of the 4 1/2" blade has an extended cutting curve that
is completely compatible with natural hand and arm movement. Note the old
fashioned match striker on the backspine, a
feature that also provides thumb stability in field use.

The 10-inch Trailmaker
is an awesome performer. It effortlessly severs a free-hanging two-inch
manila rope in one quick stroke. The convex ground blade is hand honed to a
razor edge that has to be used to be appreciated. Webster Marble was an
experienced outdoorsman who enjoyed being in the field in very rough
terrain. That would explain his proclivity towards large knives with 6, 7,
8 and 10-inch blades. He began production of the Model 56 Trailmaker with a 10-inch blade in late 1908 or early
1909. About 25,000 were made between 1909 and 1958, including some 7-inch
versions during the 1950s. Virtually all of these were made with stacked
leather and stag handles. The 10-inch Trailmaker
is laser cut from solid bars of high carbon 5160 modified carbon steel and
subjected to a complicated multi-step process for proper heat treat and
temper. This costly process ensures maximum edge holding,
removes all traces of brittleness for strength and minimizes warpage. The blade and handle were each lengthened
one-quarter inch. We also lengthened the choil
and ricasso. The most obvious change is the
thicker guard. By today's standards, this is a massive knife. It was vital
to choose an appropriate steel that would have
excellent edge-holding properties and also be able to tolerate the side
pressure strength of rough use in chopping tasks. You can use the Trailmaker to clear a trail, build a shelter, construct
a blind, and cut firewood. Or, just enjoy the esthetic beauty of these
impressive knives.
